Dance Like No One is Watching

That is what I tried to do a few weeks ago at an Afro Fusion dance class. Easier said than done, especially while at the same time learning a short choreography, having fun, and tapping into the bit of classical Ballet you learned a hundred years ago. But of course, don’t make it look like Ballet.

African dances, according to our teacher Marion, are much more grounded than that. While in central and southern Africa, there’s more footwork involved, we are going to use the entire body. “Feel the music!”, says Marion. “Make it your own!”

If by ‘making it my own’ she meant looking like a dork while totally enjoying myself, I am thinking: Mission accomplished! Thanks, Marion!
